New skills shared to tackle worklessness

Thursday 15th March 2012
South Staffordshire residents are being given the chance to learn new skills as part of a series of free courses being run to help tackle worklessness in the district.

Residents are being encouraged to enrol on courses which range from money management, project planning, and IT training, to photography, painting and decorating, and social media training, being run throughout 2012.

The free courses are being run by staff from housing organisation Housing Plus, South Staffordshire Housing Association and Property Care, which are both a part of Housing Plus, as well as Staffordshire County Council and South Staffordshire Community Voluntary Action (SSCVA).

The courses are aimed at helping people brush-up on existing skills or learn new ones, to improve confidence and gain employment opportunities.

Resident engagement officer for SSHA, Jackie Ilic, said: "We are committed to supporting our tenants to develop the skills they need to access the employment opportunities, financial support and personal development that they are capable of achieving. The skills covered in the courses include communicating and confidence building, as well as IT, money management and other practical skills."

Most of the sessions are run over one day and last between two and six hours. One course is run over a day a week for five weeks.

One SSHA resident, who is an ex-serviceman, has signed up for a variety of the courses to broaden his skills with the hope that it will open up new job opportunities.

He said: "These courses are based very much around life skills that people need but aren't readily available to everyone. It is great that SSHA is giving people the chance to learn these skills to better them personally and the community.

"I am looking forward to learning painting and decorating and computer skills as these were things I wasn't taught in the military. It is going to be great to experience different things and perhaps get a new direction in life."

If you are interested in finding out more information about the courses then visit www.ssha.co.uk or email communityengagement@ssha.co.uk or call SSHA on 0800 069 8690.
