Credit where it's due

Langley's social landlord, Riverside, is encouraging families to save and access affordable credit, handing out piggy banks to tots, teens and their mums and dads.
Riverside is working with Rochdale Boroughwide Housing to offer services from Manchester Credit Union at the social landlords' local offices. |

As part of Riverside's bid to help people better manage their finances, residents of the Langley estate can now access Manchester Credit Union's services, based at its Langley office.
The credit union has been holding a surgery every Monday morning, 9-12, since October last year, as part of its mission to extend its services to people in Rochdale, Heywood and Middleton. Since then, it has signed up almost 300 new members, who have opened savings accounts with over 100 applying for loans.
Sharon Thomas is Riverside's community initiatives officer in Langley. She said: "We always encourage people to use credit unions rather than expensive door step lenders, high interest stores, or illegal loan sharks. Those who set up a savings account with a credit union can be sure that their money is being used to help others in their community, rather than paying fat cat bankers' bonuses." |
